God Wants To Answer Your Prayers, Chapter 5

Reading Time: 5 minutesSometime after I saw that Jesus really meant what he was saying in Matthew 7:7-8, I was again meditating on it, trying to figure it out, trying to understand it, trying to understand how it worked:
“Ask and it will be given to you… For everyone who asks receives…”
Just going over it again, and again, repeating it to myself, thinking about it. As I was doing this, I think I might have been upset by an unanswered prayer, I thought, ‘But this, obviously, isn’t true.’ I talked to Jesus about it, “Jesus what you’re saying here is obviously not true. Lots of people ask and as far as they can tell it’s not given to them. Most people ask and don’t receive…

God Wants To Answer Your Prayers, Chapter 2

Reading Time: 7 minutesHere’s how I like to think about it. I imagine going before God to make a request, to submit my prayer. I’m waiting for my turn in an antechamber outside God’s throne room, there’s a tall, wide, doorway open to God’s throne room. As I look through the doorway I see God’s throne a ways off. Then I see, carved into the stone above the doorway, these words,
“Ask and it shall be given you… for everyone that asketh receiveth.”

God Wants To Answer Your Prayers, #2

Reading Time: 8 minutesI didn’t know what to make of Jesus’s statement. I didn’t know how to reconcile, “for everyone who asks receives,” with reality. It seemed obvious that it wasn’t true. Was Jesus lying, was he mistaken, were these not really his words, was the Bible not really God’s Word, did these words not mean what they appeared to mean? So I put it on the shelf. From time to time I’d come back to it and try and understand.
Then one day I saw it.

Why God Won’t Answer Your Prayers, video

Reading Time: < 1 minuteJesus taught that God wants to answer our prayers, but most Christians have been taught about prayer in such as way that, as Charles Finney put it, “Their prayers were just such as God had promised not to answer.” I want to change your picture of prayer by showing you that even after God says “Yes!” to our prayers we still won’t receive the answer if we fail to do our part. Video, lasts about 35 minutes.

Prayer Isn’t a Slot Machine, It’s a Garden!

Reading Time: 7 minutesMost people think about prayer like a kind of slot machine. You put your coin in, pull the handle, and hope for the best. Nothing you do can change the outcome and when your prayer isn’t answered it’s not a big surprise. But if you actually stop to look at what the Bible says about prayer you’ll be shocked to discover that the Bible talks about prayer like it’s a sure thing, a certainty, a guarantee. The Bible pictures prayer as something more like a garden. It’s a sure thing, everyone can have a garden, but it requires effort on our part. There are things we must do, conditions we must meet to receive the answer to our prayers. (Read the rest of this post on my blog here: http://goo.gl/D62Ru )

Answered Prayer…#2 Fly by your Believe-O-Meter and ignore your senses.

Reading Time: 9 minutesIn part one we saw that Jesus guarantees the dependability, the reliability, the certainty of prayer. There are no stronger words Jesus could use to guarantee that we would receive what we ask for when we pray than, “…you shall have them…,” but at the same time he lets us know that we have a part to play.
